My yoga classes are in the classical Hatha tradition. For over 25 years, and in my yoga teacher trainings, I have studied with teachers who are steeped in Iyengar and Anusara traditions. These approaches to the yoga asana practice emphasize healthy and safe alignments, and the use of yoga props (such as blocks, blankets, bolsters, and straps) to modify postures for many types of bodies and levels of ability. Yoga poses look and feel different in every body, and even in the same body on different days. There is no “one size fits all.”
Gentle Yoga
Gentle does not mean easy. A gentle yoga practice offers the opportunity to slow down the pace of your movement, tune in to your breathing, and quiet your thoughts. These classes will incorporate poses to build strength (such as standing poses), along with poses that build flexibility and mobility. Gentle yoga can create space for you to tune in to yourself, to feel focused and calm. These class sequences will often incorporate some restorative poses, and end with a guided Savasana (corpse pose). Gentle yoga is appropriate for all levels. Some Gentle classes are more alignment focused, while others are a very slow flow, like a meditation in motion.
Restorative Yoga
Restorative yoga is intended to allow your body to rest deeply. In this class, props are used to create supported poses that allow your body to fully relax so that your mind can release. At times, you might achieve what’s called a “hypnogogic” state that is between being awake and asleep. This style of yoga can move your nervous system from “fight or flight” mode into “rest and digest mode” so it’s not uncommon to feel or hear some tummy gurgles. Restorative yoga is appropriate for all levels.
Prenatal Yoga
This gentle practice is modified to help you nurture yourself and connect with your changing body, your breathing, and this beautiful phase of life. Poses can help you build strength and cultivate relaxation. Abdominal strengthening, pelvic floor awareness, and breathing practices can be beneficial for the experience of childbirth. A way to build community with others who are also their pregnancy journey.
